SIS Introductory Seminars are undergraduate courses of component type ISF, ISS, IDS –
Department and program faculty are invited to propose courses; the relevant course administrators manage the records. Catalog numbers have suffices of “N” or “Q”.
Another type of introductory seminar is offered as Sophomore College (SCS) or Arts Intensive (AIP), during the intercession between summer and autumn quarters. These course records are established and maintained by SIS and have restricted enrollment. Catalogue numbers have suffices of “SC” or “AX”. For more information, visit http://www.stanford.edu/dept/undergrad/cgi-bin/drupal_ual/OO_soph_college_SocoCurrent.html
The difference is in the enrollment process. Students must apply and obtain instructor permission before they are either enrolled (by this office) or can add the course to their study list.
SIS Introductory Seminars program controls the enrollment by virtue of the application process. Thus, before August 1, all introsem course records’ enrollment consent are set by this office to DEPARTMENT CONSENT. Students will either be enrolled by this office or wait until the first day of class for the quarter when they may self enroll, with instructor permission.
The exception: courses that offer satisfaction of the WRITE 2 requirement; IHUM-linked (Spring quarter) intro sems; and Sophomore College or Arts Intensive. For these courses this office oversees and handles the class rosters so these remain DEPARTMENT CONSENT for either ADD or DROP.
The VPUE course administration website is a related database. Some Course details—day, time, location, units, component, GERs, grade type--are refreshed daily from Peoplesoft records. The key to this is the Course ID. This also means that any updates that you make in Peoplesoft for such things as adding cross- listings or changing the component may throw off the VCAis information to student applicants. So if you enter any Peoplesoft changes to intro sems, please do not hesitate to inform introsems@stanford.edu; we will do likewise.
